What is Delvin Data Demo?
Here at Delvin, we feel that one of the greatest challenges in learning a foreign language is making the jump from "book learning" to understanding real-life language. This is especially true with a difficult language like Japanese. Many have argued that having large amounts of comprehensible input is a key requirement for language acquisition (Input Hypothesis, Antimoon, AJATT). And it's all the more effective if the input is fun and incremental.
Native-language content by itself is not sufficient to do this well. Learners need accurate translations and word-by-word breakdowns of material for it to be really useful. So it seems like what's needed is not just better apps, but better data. Taking Japanese as an example, there are countless learning apps and sites, but only a handful of high-quality datasets that power them, like the ubiquitous JMdict and Tatoeba. Tatoeba is great, but is relatively lacking in audio/video and most of its sentences are not natural, native text but derived translations. What if there was an open dataset designed for the purpose of providing authentic comprehensible input?
Inspired by this, we've been working on an experiment called Delvin Data. Our idea is start with an open, structured database of language, based on video clips from authentic, immersive sources (e.g. those meant for natives). Authentic video makes it fun; structure (esp. indexing by words) lets it be customized and incremental. Given that data, what kinds of new apps/sites/decks could be made? We've built one study site using the data (the SRS-based Delvin), and it seems promising to us.
We're ready to take the idea further if there's enough interest from the learning community. If this is something you want to see developed further or want to collaborate, let us know!

¿No vino quién?
#11438 / 56
Who didn't come?
-
¿Cómo que no?
#11332 / 56
No... it's not important. What do you mean? Come here. Why were they demanding to speak to Mom?
-
¿Sí o no?
#12522 / 59
Yes or no?
-
Hoy no vino, Candela.
#11437 / 56
He didn't come today, Candela.

No sabemos quién es.

We don't know who it is.
-
Claro que no, patrona.
#11877 / 58
Of course not, boss.
-
Y ya no está.
#11373 / 56
And he's not here anymore.
-
¡No le hagas nada, por favor!
#10908 / 53
Don't do anything to him, please!
-
Puta madre. Qué frío, ¿no?
#8637 / 52
Fuck, it's cold. Nice little summer we're having...
-
Bueno. No tenemos ni un centavo.
#8705 / 52
And we're broke. What? You don't have a penny?
-
Pero ya no hay tiempo, alma.
#10803 / 53
But there's not time, Alma.

Así no se puede vivir, Sofía.
#10857 / 53
One can't live like this, Sofía.

Sí, pero no se lo permitieron.
#11247 / 56
She told me she wanted to see Mr. Ignacio one last time... Yes, but they didn't let her. Instead, they treated her like garbage.

Usted no me dejó otra salida, señora.
#12039 / 58
You didn't give me a choice, ma'am.

Pero mucho ayuda el que no estorba.
#12199 / 58
Not getting in the way would help.

-
- Pero ustedes no fueron a misa. - No.
#9425 / 52

-

#8792 / 52
-Hit the brakes! -What brakes? -What do you mean? -The brakes are gone! Fucking mechanic!

No, abuelo. De hecho, Leonardo no hizo nada.
#12055 / 58
No, Grandpa. In fact, Leonardo hasn't done anything.
-
Pero divorcio no, Sofía. Eso si que no.
#11432 / 56
I'll prove that you're wrong about Leonardo. You can't get divorced. You simply can't. I don't need a man to run my father's businesses.
-
#11350 / 56
I know it's not a good time and I'm sorry, but I can't keep up this lie anymore. I want you to stop con.
-
¡¿Tú?! No entiendo nada. ¿Por qué traes esa actitud?
#12057 / 58
You? I don't get it. Why the long face?
-
#9506 / 52
I'd like to add something else, completely unrelated to this toast... Don't worry, I won't dance.
-
No, estás loca. ¿Tú quieres saber quién me gusta?
#12578 / 59
You're insane. Do you want to know who I like?

That's the problem. We don't know anything.
-
- Mi cumpleaños es hoy. - Ya sé. Pero vos no...
#9523 / 52
-No. Now. -No, not now. My birthday is today, not tomorrow. Yeah, I know, Fuser, but you're not going to... Are you nuts? At night? The animals in there will eat you alive!
-
#9019 / 52
And guess what? Alberto turned 30, but not in Venezuela as he had planned. We were so tired, Mum, we couldn't celebrate.
-
#11223 / 56
You won't get anywhere like this, boys.
-
#9451 / 52
I should be thinking ahead, huh?
-
#10736 / 53

#11399 / 56

No, I haven't seen them. But I'm sure they're on their way.

Ah, ya no sé, me parece demasiado rebuscado, capitán.
#12205 / 58
But what if someone took her? I don't know anymore. It . Besides, remember we'd need an order from a judge,
-
A ver, aquí no pasa nada, aunque me dejen sola.
#11189 / 56
They made a scene. You're not handling this alone. It's no big deal. I can do it. Go inside the house, Sofia. I'll take care of this.
-
Me encantaría. Pero… no quiero hacer enojar a mis hermanos.
#11075 / 53
I'd love to. But… I don't want to annoy my brothers.

Tal vez nuestra apariencia no lo acredite, ¿no? Pero somos médicos.
#8519 / 52
What do you want? It may not look like it, but, well, we're both doctors... from Buenos Aires and Córdoba, respectively.
-
#11349 / 56
I know it's not a good time and I'm sorry.
-
#10846 / 53
Even better, why don't you stay and live here?
-
#8567 / 52
I see, there's nothing you can do for me. Yes, we can. If you give us food and a place to sleep... There's a lake full of fish and a tool shed nearby.
-
#10879 / 53
How is it that you don't know what the meeting's about?
-
No sé.
#12066 / 58
I don't know. I suppose I feel like I owe him.
-
#12230 / 58
All the more reason. You should be willing to collaborate with me, don't you think?
-
¿Cómo quieren alimentar el cuerpo si antes no alimentaron el alma?
#9426 / 52
So, how do you expect to feed the body if you haven't first fed the soul?
-
No… me toques.
#11372 / 56
Don't touch me. Dad was the only person who understood me.
-
#8859 / 52
The mechanic won't be in until tomorrow, but the bike can stay right here.

#12120 / 58
If I were in love, I wouldn't care about anything... just being with him.
-
#9314 / 52
If it's not contagious, then it’s just symbolic, right? Yes, I'm just telling you so you don't make any mortal enemies. You know what, Doctor, you'll excuse us, but we're not going to wear them.
-
¿A qué cuenta se refiere? Yo a usted no le debo nada.
#11876 / 58
What are you talking about? I don't owe you anything.
-
#9084 / 52
How is it possible to feel nostalgia for a world I never knew?
-
#10905 / 53
If that guy doesn't show his face to your family it's because of something!
-
#11048 / 53
But don't say anything to your brothers until I talk to them.
-
#12266 / 58
Gentlemen, what happened today can't happen again.

#11523 / 56
No, Lucía, thanks. But we want to keep Alma's room the way it was at our house.

#12194 / 58
I don't know what you should do, but it can't be parked here.

#11954 / 58
For now, we're close to these people. We have an advantage. They don't know who we are.

#12206 / 58
Besides, remember we'd need an order from a judge, which we don't have.
-
#11208 / 56
But it's in my hands now, and the truth doesn't matter when you have power.
-
#12622 / 59
Something between you and Miranda, right? No, sir. No... I'm just nervous about Mr. Leonardo. That's all.
-
#11454 / 56
Loud and clear, partner. So clear that whenever you want to ride a new mare that isn't your own, make yourself at home here.
